Abstract:
This work attempts to employ the technology of distributed and active databases in order to
provide support for application-oriented software products implementing workflow
techniques. Workflow can be seen as the automation and control of the sequence of actions
or steps used in business processes. The basic technologies required to support Workflow
are: Distributed Objects, Active Database Rules and Extended Transaction Processing. This
work proposes a framework for workflow applications and investigates its feasibility and
effectiveness by applying current technologies such as Java Database Connectivity (JDBC),
Java's Remote Method Invocation (RMI) and the recent Oracle 8i System.
