This study examines the experiences of women in the Internal Security Forces (ISF) of Lebanon, with a focus on understanding the challenges and opportunities they face in a predominantly male profession. The lack of research on women's experiences in law enforcement organizations in Lebanon necessitates an investigation into this underexplored area. This research is particularly relevant in the context of Lebanon, a patriarchal society dealing with complex issues surrounding women's rights influenced by cultural, religious, political, and other factors.
The ISF in Lebanon has seen a slow but gradual increase in the recruitment of women, with only two women recruited in 2001 and a significant increase to 800 women in 2012, after 11 years. By 2022, these women would have accumulated ten years of experience, potentially exposing them to gender-related challenges and marginalization. This study aims to explore the experiences of women police officers through an interpretive phenomenological analysis using questionnaires and in-depth interviews. The participants include six women police officers across various ranks, marital status, communities and religions. To complement the qualitative data, the study analyzes policies and regulations. Various sources, such as academic journals, books, and government documents, are utilized to present comprehensive and credible information.
The findings aim to contribute to social, legal, and policy changes that will enable women police officers to fully participate within the police organization in Lebanon. |
