Abstract:
Media is power, used and abused by elites worldwide for oppressing marginalized communities and maintaining the status quo. This chapter reviews the study of social movement media and the gaps in current knowledge of media education practices among media activists. It builds a brief case study of the radical media education practices within Indymedia and community radio, drawing on primary and secondary sources, including practitioner knowledge. The case study examines the tools and methods media activists use for teaching and learning about media as well as the pedagogies that inform these radical media education practices. The chapter also reflects on radical media education approaches within the classroom by drawing on lessons learned while teaching at Lebanese American University in Beirut, Lebanon. It concludes by considering the challenges and opportunities for radical media education in the classroom and beyond.
