Abstract:
The teaching of English with the use of charts and pictures deals with two important elements: art and language. This study consists of a research on both language and art. In Chapter One and Two there is an explanation of the English Language: phonology, lexicon, and grammar. Mastering that language becomes a skill in itself. The skill includes imitation and formation ~f habits which need good training. When a language is taught, there must be an explanation about that culture in which this particular language is spoken, because culture affects language to a great extent. In Chapter Three, the effective presentation of pictures as a visual aid is explained, and illustrations on the three aspects of the English Language are shown. In phonology, charts are presented on vowels and diphthongs. In vocabulary, items are drawn on the dining room. In grammar, illustrations are given on word order, function words, and inflections. This gives an efficient display of the English Language and its presentation in the elementary classroom as a foreign or second language to Arab pupils. As any other medium, pictures and charts have their limitations and advantages. The author hopes that the medium would be used in the most efficient way by teachers.
