Abstract:
I have endeavored to discuss expressionism in four plays written by the American playwright, Eugene O'Neill. In the first Chapter I have traced the historical background of expressionism in fine arts-painting and drama. The other two chapters deal with expressionism in O'Neill's four plays: the Emperor Jones, the Hairy Ape the Great God Brown and Dynamo. In the second Chapter I have discussed expressionism as 1 t appears in the themes of the plays and in the literary devices O’Neill used to write these plays. The theatrical and technical devices of these plays were my concern in the last chapter of this study.
