The Department of Humanities, in collaboration with the Department of English and the Centre for Arts and Humanities at the American University of Beirut, invites you to the book launch of two critical anthologies of Levantine theater.
A decade-long collaboration between LAU Associate Professor of Arabic Studies Nada Saab and AUB Professor of English and Creative Writing Robert Myers, involving research, translation and production of plays from the Levant, has culminated in the publication of two major new books.
Modern and Contemporary Political Theater from the Levant: A Critical Anthology (Brill) traces the recent history of political theater in the Levant through translations of plays and studies of the playwrights who wrote them. Sentence to Hope: A Sa’dallah Wannous Reader (Yale University Press) is a collection of plays and other writings by the Syrian playwright and a critical introduction to his work. Wannous is one of the most important contemporary dramatists and social critics from the Arab world.
Dr. Saab and Dr. Myers will present their work, show clips of productions of the plays, and professional actors will read selected scenes. |
