Confronted with the problem of overflows from its combined sewer system into the River Seine during rainfall, the Department of the Hauts de Seine (which covers some thirty urban districts on the west side of Paris) has decided to implement the real time control of its sewer system. To initiate this plan, as the town of Boulogne Billancourt seemed to be a particularly favourable site for the use of such techniques, a project to control its sewer system in real time has been implemented within the scope of the SPRINT 226 programme financed by the European Community.
The preliminary studies, based on a MOUSE computer model of the sewer system, showed that the real time control of the sewer network under study had a high potential benefit, since it would allow an 80% reduction of the volumes of waste water discharged into the Seine annually in the study zone. Following on from these encouraging results, the installation of a complete real time control system was set in hand. The system, at present undergoing testing and evaluation, consists principally of a MOUSE ON LINE real time model and a system for forecasting rainfall by means of radar images.

Current practice generally leads to overdesigning with respect to catastrophic accidents involving gross melting of fuel elements. It is clear, however, that from both the standpoints of cost and safety it would be desirable to be able to base the design on calculations regarding the details of the melting process itself. This paper considers the gross melting of fuel plates and rods and seeks to estimate the extent of melting and the rapidity with which it occurs. Methods of analysis are presented in detail in the present exploratory study. For short times after the onset of melting, an analytical series solution is constructed by the ‘embedding technique’. The effect of the change in density which accompaies the change in phase is examined, and is found to be relatively unimportant as far as the melting front position is concerned. An exact steady-state solution is found, which makes possible a prediction of the maximum extent of melting in cases in which steady state can be expected. The actual progress of melting for all times is more difficult to calculate, and an approximate solution is therefore introduced. Its accuracy can, in some cases, be estimated by comparison with the known final melting extent. The approximate solution is applied to a class of melting problems, and the results are presented in the form of graphs depicting the progress of the melting front for a range of parameters representing various possible conditions.

A nation's architectural heritage is an important part of its identity, and a testament to its history. This article looks at the Lebanese house – a fine example of the relationship between architecture, identity and history. It describes the architectural development of Lebanese dwellings and the influence of both Muslim and Christian civilizations, which together produced this unique architectural phenomenon. The article also explains how the Lebanese house reflects the identity of the Lebanese community and nation, and how it illustrates the mosaic of different cultures and civilizations that have left their mark on Lebanon.

This paper will examine the theoretical work of one of the major proponents of a phenomenological approach in architecture, the historian-theoretician Christian Norberg-Schulz, examining the development of his ideas across 30 years. While Norberg-Schulz started out with Intentions in Architecture (1963), a work that was clearly influenced by structuralist studies, he soon shifted to a phenomenological approach with Existence, Space and Architecture (1971), and then with Genius Loci (1980) and The Concept of Dwelling (1985). He attempted through this trilogy to lay down the foundations of a phenomenological interpretation of architecture, with an underlying agenda that espoused certain directions in contemporary architecture. This paper will examine the major writings of Christian Norberg-Schulz, critically evaluating his interpretation of phenomenology in architecture in its ambiguous relation to the project of modernity.

The history of Post-Modern Architecture was to a large extent tied to the name of Charles Jencks, who played an operative role in promoting the movement, much like his predecessor Sigfried Giedion had done for Modern Architecture in the 1930s. Like Giedion, Jencks was a prolific writer and a protagonist of a radical change in the direction of architecture. In the thirty-five year period from the appearance of his first book in 1971, Jencks published more than twenty four works, not counting the ones he edited or co-edited. And like Giedion, Jencks also attempted to reach a synthesis of opposites, by including disparate examples within his original ‘canon’, extending it in its last revision to include works by Eisenman and Tschumi, as Giedion had done by the inclusion of Aalto and Utzon in his later editions of Space, Time and Architecture. This paper will discuss Jencks's historiography of Post-Modernism by looking at the seminal texts that he wrote from 1970 until 2007, beginning with Architecture 2000 and ending with Critical Modernism. The main focus of this article is critically to examine his major work, the Language of Post Modernism, and to trace its evolution as a means of evaluating his contribution to the development of this movement, as well as to architectural historiography.

In this paper, I will discuss the results of the international competition that was organized in the spring of
1994, to redesign the souks of Beirut. This competition, which attracted more than 300 entries from around
the world, was a unique event in the history of the reconstruction of Beirut, as it was the only open
competition to be held for the reconstruction of a major urban space in this city after the war. I have chosen a
selection of projects to discuss in this paper, highlighting the various approaches that architects take when
faced with a problem of this scope.

This study deals with storage jars/amphorae from the Late Roman and Byzantine periods found in the salvage excavations at the site of Horbat Castra, located at the foot of the Carmel Ridge across from Kfar Samir. The excavation was carried out by the Israel Antiquities Authority and directed by Z. Yeivin and G. Finkielsztejn. Numerous storage jars/amphorae were found at the site. Horbat Castra functioned mostly in the Byzantine period (4th–6th centuries AD) and seems to have been a main centre for wine and oil production, supplying its immediate neighbourhood, the general region and overseas destinations. Following the analysis of the amphorae types at Horbat Castra, an interesting quantitative picture emerges. From among the imported amphorae there are a number of the LRA 1, LRA 2 and LRA 10 types. There are also Tunisian amphorae. For the closed regional forms we have the Bag-shaped Jar, which is the most common jar in the region. The ceramics are then compared to the storage jars/amphorae found in the sea along the coast of Kfar Samir, in underwater surveys carried out on behalf of the marine unit of the Israel Antiquities Authority under the direction of E. Galili and Y. Sharvit. The finds from the sea are mostly local jar types. An effort is made to understand the nature of the trade and economy of the northern coast of the Carmel Ridge, and the sea transport of the Roman-Byzantine period in the Southern Levant. The varied types of imported goods found at Horbat Castra bear witness to trade which encompassed much of the Mediterranean basin.

In a short article presented at a conference in New York City two years ago, Joan Ockman lucidly diagnosed the contemporary dilemma faced by architecture, i.e. how to insert itself between a pessimistic discourse that warns of the end of time, and an uncritical surrender to globalization. This dilemma is now universal(i). It applies to New York City, where in the same context Kenneth Frampton commented on the dystopia of an “oddly paranoid, rather ruthless, instrumental and resentful landscape”(ii), as well as to other cities around the world, especially in the Third World, where more difficult conditions permeate architectural practice, resulting in even more devastated landscapes. This article will discuss issues that relate to architectural practice and pedagogy, drawing on specific examples in the context of Beirut, Lebanon, and reflecting on the impact of‘architectural education’ and the transformations within the architectural profession in this context. One can no longer deny the negative impact of economics on a profession that has been, for the most part, idealistic in its approach to the built environment, but the responsibility of architects and architectural education, can no longer beminimized in assessing the problems that cities like Beirut face today.

Confronted with the problem of overflows from its combined sewer system into the River Seine during rainfall, the Department of the Hauts de Seine (which covers some thirty urban districts on the west side of Paris) has decided to implement the real time control of its sewer system in 1996. To initiate this plan, as the town of Boulogne Billancourt seemed to be a particularly favourable site for the use of such techniques, a project to control its sewer system in real time has been implemented within the scope of the SPRINT 226 programme financed by the European Community. The preliminary studies, based on a MOUSE computer model of the sewer system, showed that the real time control of the sewer network under study had a high potential benefit, since it would allow an 80 % reduction of the volumes of waste water discharged into the Seine annually in the study zone. Following on from these encouraging results, the installation of a complete real time control system was set in hand. The system, at present undergoing testing and evaluation, consists principally of a MOUSE ON LINE real time model and a system for forecasting rainfall by means of radar images.

Lahoud, A. L. (2004). Restoration of fragile remains of bridges in Lebanon. In The first international conference on archaeology and conservation, 12-17 August 2002, Jordan (pp. 347-357).
http://libraries.lau.edu.lb/research/laur/terms-of-use/articles.php
Many bridges have been built in Lebanon, due to its geography of rivers and valleys. These bridges mostly belong to Roman, Mediaeval and Ottoman periods or to the French mandate. With modern urban development, new vacant transportation means such as highways appeared in Lebanon during the 1920s. These new roads crossed through the same passages as the old roads or bridges; sometimes they were parallel and sometimes overlapping. The historical variable bridges became residue and adjacent to the new highways. Large high-speed highways transformed the historical bridges into neglected elements of the landscape. Only a few bridges, belonging to the French mandate (1920-1945), are still used as vacant transportation means. This article presents a proposal to promote and enhance those remaining historical bridges. The proposal includes techniques to be used, including lighting and security system as well as restoration and consolidation interventions, the transformation process and the activity proposal. The author uses the Jaj Bridge to illustrate this proposal.

Numerous questions arise from the topic of writing and research for graphic design. For example: Why do graphic designers often not learn to research and write for design until studying at the Masters or even the PhD level? Why do many faculty of graphic design not have knowledge of common research paper writing? If they were not taught this process and can not contribute to the future world of design research, who will? Furthermore, how will today’s students learn this valuable skill? Research and writing are not simply for the scientist or historian buried in books and publishing for a limited scope. Every publication, printed material and on-line resource regarding design should involve research and writing. Many of today’s professional publications on graphic design are little more than image-based “eye-candy” with no, explanation, information or description included. Through the examination of current design research in publications and journals the potential expansion of written research in graphic design is explored. Problems within pedagogical approaches and graphic design studies are approached. Moreover, the promise of graphic design students as great researchers and writers through combined creativity and logic is investigated. Research paper writing is a means of influence and inspiration for design innovation. Questioning, analysis, and a formulation of ideas into words and solutions benefit not only the growth of the individual designer but also the reputation of the graphic design discipline. The lack of writing and research within contemporary graphic design studies is detrimental to the current state of the profession. However, improvements are possible. The advancement of design writing and research can be made through: modifications to undergraduate graphic design programs, improvements in faculty development and an analysis of contemporary design publications

Khoury, M. P., & Khoury, T. E. Cultural identity crisis within contemporary graphic design case study: Lebanon
http://libraries.lau.edu.lb/research/laur/terms-of-use/articles.php
http://www.dis.uia.mx/conference/2009/articulos/cultural_identi.pdf
Visual representations of Lebanese culture are rich and diverse. Traditionally, Lebanese culture is a unique mixture of the East and West. However, Westernization jeopardizes this cultural identity in contemporary Lebanese graphic design. Furthermore, today's Lebanese design students commonly refer to Western inspirations and view Middle Eastern influences as conventional. Student designers are integral to the revival of their visual culture. Pedagogical approaches can encourage the incorporation of visual culture into design by embracing change without oblitera- ting the past. Adjustments are necessary in design studies through the modernization of Lebanese visual culture within graphic contexts. The future existence of a Lebanese visual cultural identity is possible through changes in graphic design studies.

The visual communication of word, meaning and content too often is overlooked in graphic design studies. Graphic design students commonly create designs in which content plays a secondary role while emphasis is placed upon aesthetic and visceral approaches. This predicament derives from the students’ lack of guidance in comprehending, creating and transmitting written information. An examination of common collaborations in undergraduate studies indicates that a range of disciplines other than writing are often combined with graphic design. However, graphic design should be visual communication through word and image. Therefore, words should play an integral role in graphic design education. The question then arises: What kind of words could possibly provide content that stimulates change within graphic design studies? Literature poses great potential. It is an ever-evolving, multi-faceted discipline, which places emphasis on aesthetics. An analysis of the relationships between literature and graphic design indicates that numerous commonalities exist. Key examples of parallelisms occur within the realms of: Imagist poetry, visible words, words in motion, fairy tale animation and digital media. In conclusion, literature offers a valuable and diverse content base with the capacity to inspire and enrich today’s visually oriented graphic design studies.

he Egg is an iconic ruin in Beirut. It was once the Beirut City Centre's cinema, designed by Lebanese modernist architect Joseph Philippe Karam in 1965. This structure's use is complex and ever changing. As such, the Egg is a continuous source of discussions and depictions. This article is a textual analysis exploring visual structures within a series of 15 images of the Egg. The notion of memory is examined within each image. Memory is viewed as a phenomenon rooted in the past with a relationship to the present and the future. Contemporary representations of the Egg are a fascinating reflection related to Lebanon, the civil war, memories of today, and inquiries regarding the memories of unknown future contexts.

Henry van de Velde's intellectual relation to Nietzsche constitutes one of the interesting episodes in the early developments of Modernism in architecture. On the basic level, it opens the question of the influence of a radical philosopher of Modernity on a contemporary artist: while at another level it raises the question of the correspondence between ‘idea’and ‘form’ in the context of an architectural problem: the project for the Nietzsche Monument in Weimar.
Although this relation has already been explored by other scholars, this paper will look at some of the parallels in the thoughts of the philosopher and the artist, as in their vision of the role of art in culture, while also examining the discrepancies in Henry van de Velde's understanding, or appropriation, of the Nietzschean message. This is evident in the Nietzsche Monument project, a project that showed the artist's difficulty at the time in conceptualizing a project that would concretize the philosopher's vision. Finally, this paper will explore the parallel notions of power and force, the former being a foundational nation in ihe philosopher's thought, the latter afoundational notion in ihe artist's aesthetic theory.

his paper will discuss the developments in architecture in Lebanon in the second half of the Twentieth century. Lebanon presents one of the interesting ‘laboratories’ of the different tendencies and movements of this pastcentury, beginning with Modernism and its gradual assimilation, to Postmodernism and more current trends,in a context that presents a fertile field for experimentation. The questions of meaning, context, relations to place and tradition, have all played a part in the development ofarchitecture in Lebanon, without necessarily achieving their desired goals, especially in the current climate of globalization. The loss of material identity that many regions around the world have experienced is reflected in the case of Lebanon, exacerbated here by political and social conflicts. This paper argues that the attempts to reinject material forms with a measure of ‘communicative’ symbols or forms fails in the end to answer to this perpetual desire for ‘identity’.

It seems like all the architectural debates are finished as nobody cares for the “old” problems like people or lodgings. Architecture today means publicity and its beauty follows is the subject to the same conditions. The risk is that architecture has become an object design.

Contemporary sensory reality has been dominated by the sole sense of vision. This has largely affected the design process and eventually the relationship between designer and the work. This dominance of the image creates a distancing effect. Consequently, designers lack both proprioceptive and haptic performative abilities. This article explores the importance of both of these abilities for the design process, and looks to Augmented Reality as the medium that re-establishes these abilities within digital design. Moreover, the role of augmented perception in enabling unforeseen organizations, and in synthesizing bodily movement and interaction with objects and spaces, is highlighted and discussed. This article capitalizes on two distinct characteristics that enrich the design process, which are multiple readings of the same, and non-linear spatio-temporal immersion. The former allows for all appearing and absent information to be incorporated in the design decisions, whereas the latter enables a destabilization of perceptive capacities. Both incite a more profound investigation of the formal, the experiential, the spatial, and eventually the design narrative. As such, this article considers design not as an act of mere formation, but as an incessant performance of multiple decisions, direction, forms, experiences, and perceptive relations. The role of Augmented Reality in capitalizing on these notions and abilities is highlighted and explained through real-life examples.

One of the main goals of design education is to enhance and enable creative thinking. Therefore, effectively teaching visual representational and interpretational skills is vital for the communication and articulation of such ideations. This article will explore examples from two specific introductory design studios where my personal pedagogical approach emphasises drawing as a creative language of reflection and critical conceptualisation. The aim of my approach accentuates the exploration any idea through drawing and thus allowing this graphic language to aid in the generation of creative thinking. Drawing, then, assumes the role of a research process concerned not only with the projection of thoughts, but with the study of correlations, and the consequent incorporation of perceptive and conceptual articulations.

This special issue of al-raida on Women and Photography addresses photography as a medium that challenges gender roles, positions, and attributes as seen in the mainstream media. It includes papers by contributors who examine the practice of women photographers in the Middle East as well as the different ways women are represented in photographs from a variety of perspectives that range from critical art disciplines to the social sciences.

The fall of the Ottoman Empire and the establishment of the French Mandate created many conflicts and much debate in the Middle East region. The paper will attempt to answer the following questions: How were these conflicts in the context of Lebanon represented through Marie al-Khazens (1899-1983) photographs? What does the change in pose and attire signify within an emerging culture caught between the two imperial powers of the Ottoman Empire and the French mandate? And where can modernity be located between the rural subject and the urban subject? Unlike the mainstream representational strategies of Middle Eastern women which were structured around white male European fantasies of the sort that circulated widely at the turn of the Twentieth-Century in images such as Marie Lydie Bonfilss (1837-1919) bedouin woman, in Marie al-Khazens photographs, women projected a local female subjectivity.
This paper explores the relationship between modernity and femininity as manifest through the womens activity, gaze and attire in Marie al-Khazen as well as other photographs taken in the Middle East region between the 1930s and the 1940s. Al-Khazen and the women represented in the photographs of this period were part of a cosmopolitan sensibility that reveals the Middle East region to be far more international than one might have imagined. Caught between projecting a self-image of the cosmopolitan woman and one of the traditional bedouin, these photographs provide a rich field for tracking the ambiguities of the modern.

Marie al-Khazen (1899-1983) is an amateur photographer who took most
of her photographs in the 1920s and 1930s in and around Zgharta, a
village in the North of Lebanon. In this paper, I will analyze how gender
a category used to express differences between male and female
individuals depending on a combination of naturally endowed and chosen
attributes, abilities, appearances, and expressive codes —is represented
socially and culturally in a number of her photographs through complex
conventions and significations. How and in what way men inhabit alKhazen’s
photographs is the focus of this paper. These photographs were
produced during a period that is often characterized as predominantly
patriarchal. In most of the photographs selected for this paper, I will
argue that, al-Khazen reflects this predominantly patriarchal ideology
and will show how most of al-Khazen’s photographs prescribe to
meanings of masculinity as heroic.
While analyzing the photographs, I consider the following question: How
do representations of masculinity differ from representations of
femininity in al-Khazen’s photographs? Her position being behind the
camera puts her in control of the image provided to us today. In other
words, she is not a neutral mediator, but, rather, manifests control
through her choice of the subject matter, the moments that she wanted to
be salient in her life, the light and shadow, the objects in the foreground

Masculinities Journal and background setting, the subjects’ positions within the space of the photograph and the ways in which these subjects perform their social relations to each other within a group. How do al-Khazen’s photographic
decisions shape our understanding of gender relations in her
photographs? I will examine the ways photographs disseminate ideas and meanings by generating discursive notions on gender. Gender is explored as a category used to express differences between male and female individuals
depending on a combination of naturally endowed and chosen attributes
and appearances. The paper offers a scrutinized study of the photographs
and the different ways manhood or rujuliyya, particularly in the rural areas in Lebanon, was culturally represented through an amplified masculinity. From having a moustache, smoking a cigarette, sporting tarabish to holding rifles, a plethora of props and accoutrement appeared in the photos to denote signs of virility.

Purpose
By looking at a selection of iconic modern projects designed by or commissioned to the prominent but not well-examined architect Sami Abdul Baki both in Lebanon and Kuwait during his most productive years in the 50s, this paper attempts to identify first main trends, influences and ideologies that shaped these works at the peak of modern architectural development in the region. Through these examples, the paper then aims at retracing predominant trajectories of intellectual capital exchange and transfer of knowledge between Lebanon and Kuwait. These can go far beyond their territorial boundaries, without claiming a single grand-narrative that describes the modern architectural development in any of the two countries.
Design/methodology/approach
The data collected from discourse analysis, interviews and biographical notes were mapped into a schematic diagram illustrating a complex network of connections and multidisciplinary involvement in projects.
Findings
However, the outcome did not generate a dominant theme for the projects or expertise of the architect.
Originality/value
It is very likely that Sami Abdul Baki's strong political dimension and quality as a mediator or facilitator in addition to his strong network of contacts played a significant role in the project commissions that he has won as an architect/engineer in Kuwait, Lebanon, Germany and other countries.

Akoury, C. Beirut: Alternative Chronotopes for an Aesthetic Experience of Presence. (Preprint)
http://libraries.lau.edu.lb/research/laur/terms-of-use/articles.php
The capital city of Lebanon has borne witness to violent and degrading events. Marred by incessant destruction, wasting, and latent promises of prosperity, the image of the city is enshrouded with a hauntingly resilient memory characterized by unresolved conflicts and urban alienation. These experiences have left their visual and experiential mark throughout the urban space producing a state of involuntary suspension. While memory appears initially to be a strictly temporal phenomenon, this article propounds the spatial repercussions of memory. Additionally, The aim of this article is to turn to artistic practices for the production of new images leading to an aesthetic experience of the presence. The article highlights selected projects by local artists and designers that attest to the formation of new aesthetic experiences of presence. These experiences provide a way out of the deadlock of past memories and tropes in favor of an alternative chronotopic image of Beirut.

Srouji, H. (2017). A Methodology of Teaching Fundamentals of Art and Design. Asian Journal of Education and e-Learning 5(4), 113-140.

https://www.researchgate.net/publication/337339470_A_Methodology_of_Teaching_Fundamentals_of_Art_and_Design
The focus of this paper is to present a methodology of teaching fundamentals of Art & Design course base on analysis of artworks, mainly paintings, aimed at supporting art & design teaching practice at the foundation year level. The main argument is that this kind of analytical research and its application has not (always) been comprehensive and may not have been guided by sufficient assessment of teaching of the fundamentals of composition. The cases here are derived from my teaching practice and research in design studios of the Foundation Studies courses at the School of Architecture and Design and are supported by the students’ outcomes in these related studio courses. The conceptual background of the program puts forward that design develops its theory from practice through the iterative creative process of “thinking through making” as it was demonstrated by the teachers in the foundation courses at the Bauhaus. (Lecanides-Arnott, 2014; Ranjan, 2005).
As a teaching methodology in question, this paper argues in favor of a direct teaching approach to core ideas relating to composition at the foundation year level of Art and Design. This may question educational methodologies concerned with the teaching of the fundamentals of art & design in general, where students are to discover compositional core ideas, processes and application within rather intuitive and indirect learning processes. Although in other teaching methodologies, the elements of composition may be referred to and may be demonstrated in lectures, analysis, projects, processes and critiques, little evidence remains to show how students are consciously aware of their significance and use.
The methodology presented in this paper urges for a more direct process of discovery and assimilation of the core ideas related to composition by the students: as firsthand research and development on their behalf. This research maintains that when core ideas are presented, synthesized and applied at an early stage in art & design teaching, students forge a deeper understanding of composition that empowers their visual thinking processes, analysis capacities, synthesis, self-critique and application.
This research considers the transmission of core ideas related to composition as a fundamental objective in art and design learning and practice. It looks at ways of expanding the findings acquired through the analysis of artworks to notable applications in art & design, where core ideas become the basis for explorations of more complex or rather different compositional structures in diverse media.
The paper also argues that most “significant” artworks are based, whether it be intuitive (visual) or intentional (rational / mathematical), on a relative and proportional relation among the “parts” that constitute the “whole”. When examined, the compositions demonstrate an inherent structural complexity comparable with a mathematical relativity among their visual constituents.
Core ideas are presented within an itemized framework of an analysis process. A case is made that the breakdown of an artwork to its essential components will help to produce essential compositional outcomes [regarded as "schemas"or blueprints] that can be used in further design applications and developments.
Then it looks at methods on how to reinvest the outcomes of the analysis in projects that would carry further the understanding and the applications of the acquired concepts, thinking processes and approaches.
Based on the notion of de-construction / re-construction, a case is made of certain possibilities of the use of the outcomes of the analysis as systems to produce novel art & design exercises and projects [new outcomes].
Such a methodology can be developed into a well-grounded and rich set of open art & design teaching approach appropriate to the needs of instructing students at introductory undergraduate levels in art, design and those in preparation for architecture schools; particularly in countries where undergraduate students have had little creative training or insufficient art education at secondary and high schools.

In Art Education, reading and understanding artworks and designs through a direct process of structural analysis improve visual thinking and performance, especially at the foundation level. This paper examines ways in which the learning process takes place. It argues that mathematical relations and geometry are underlying constitutes in artworks. The analytical process enhances the learners’ cognition, perception, and their acquisition of visual and iterative skills that can significantly affect their development. Accordingly, it considers the mechanisms of the analysis and their educational value, as these may solicit novel rereadings of the artworks and their aesthetics.

On 17 October 2019 in Beirut, a Lebanese state bodyguard confronted by demonstrators opened fire when a female protestor hit him with a side kick. Another protestor recorded this moment on his mobile phone. A single frame of the video footage was remediated shortly after as a still image and gained rapid traction across social media platforms, as did the original video. The circulation of the content online inspired a group of artists to remediate the digital image themselves into a series of artistic works, adding in the process additional layers of meaning and interpretation to its original context. Taking the digital image of the side kick as a case study, this qualitative research examines how five young Lebanese artists use ‘cyberartivism’ to participate in the rising wave of political and social transformation. Based on empirical material that consists of a series of interviews with five Lebanese artists, this study aims to understand the role of digital images in their transition from forms of evidence to remediated sites of transgression in the context of the October 2019 Revolution in Lebanon. Its purpose is to explore the way camera witnessing, connective witnessing, and the creative modification of an image and its circulation on social media can foster a sense of solidarity and dissent by empowering and strengthening protestors’ voices, thus generating new forms of leadership and agency.

Design activism theory calls on designers to take responsibility for using their design skills to make real social change though influencing the mindset of their audience. This paper discusses the specific case of architect and designer Guillaume Crédoz who collaborated with the protestors during the 17 October Revolution in Lebanon to help them carry out acts of political disobedience against corruption and government injustice. The history of design lacks examples of professionally designed objects meant to mobilize the public within protest settings, and the examples of Crédoz demonstrate that such objects can be functional, engage the user, express discontent, and support oppositional attitudes in the name of a more just society. At the same time, they can effectively support protestors in their efforts to resist. Designers can play a supportive role in introducing change through functional objects with a disruptive aesthetic.

The Legal Design movement has succeeded in proposing change to communities through collaboration between the legal and design professions. As a result, new kinds of empathetic solutions have been introduced where the citizen experience is prioritized over commercial goals. Still missing from Legal Design, however, is a stronger understanding of current theoretical literature in design that is questioning the ontology of the discipline and formulating new scenarios of transition toward the future. This paper encourages an embrace of these methodologies and cautions against their use without a solid understanding of the present and a real understanding of their potential effects. The methods of “futuring” used by designers can help the legal profession imagine better futures with a view toward implementation. These futures keep the moral compass straight for leaders whose exercise of power leads to injustice and how people can have access to justice, governance, and accountability within difficult situations.

Based on our experience of teaching the first-year Foundation studio online in an architecture program, we highlight the benefits of Blended Learning that incorporates strategic scheduling of physical and virtual delivery modes. Our qualitative observations build on recent literature that examines the use of online elements in teaching the design studio. We observed that the more theoretical aspects appear to be effectively mastered online while the practical ones that require tactile abilities are not. We identify what kinds of interaction maximize the potential of Technology Enhanced Learning (TEL) in the Foundation studio.

Chatbots are important tools for improving learning by assisting students in their daily learning activities. In recent years, Deep Learning techniques have made it possible to train chatbots in increasingly comprehensive and even adaptive ways. ChatGPT and DALL-E are the latest and most advanced examples of chatbots that are capable, respectively, of providing textual responses to questions about almost any knowledge domain and of creating an image produced by a concept expressed in a textual form. More and more, students use such applications as a support in their learning process at all levels of study. In this paper, we present the AI4Architect system, a web application to support students in creating their projects in the design domain. The system consists of two modules, structured in a pipe configuration. The first module is based on ChatGPT and the second on DALL-E: students can first post a question and then ask for one or more images to be created based on the response to that question. Our goal is to investigate if such an AI-based system can help students as draw guidance and inspiration for the production of their design projects. A controlled experiment was conducted that showed the effectiveness of the system as a valid educational support.
